History of Badminton and its development

| Battledore and Shuttlecock |
- In the year 1854 :- An early form of the sport was played in ancient Greece and it named as Battledore and Shuttlecock.
- Late 19th century :- British military officers stationed there in Pune, India, became intrested in a similar local game which was known to them as Poona.

- In 1850s :- In the southern Indian city of Tanjore, Another early version of the game was recorded and it is called as pooppanthu vilayattam (flower game) where, shuttle cocks are made with wool and card board.
- In the year 1860 :- Issac spratt, a toy dealer published a booklet, "Badminton Battledore" (but unfortunately no copy has survived).
- In the year 1873 :- The sport of poona was eventually brought back home by the officers, and was played at Duke of Beaufort's Gloucestershire residence. The residence is called as Badminton House, and then the games official name became "Badminon".

- In the year 1877 :- The Bath Badminton Club developed the first written rules.
- In the year 1893 :- The Badminton Association of the England published the set of rules and measuremnets similar to todays rules, and officially launched badminton in a house called "Dunbar" at 6 Waverley Grove, Portsmouth, England on Sep 13.
- In the year 1899 :- The first All England Open Badminton Championship held, and it is the first Badminton Competition in the world.
- In the year 1934 :- The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed with nine members - Canada, Denmark, England, France, Netherland, Ireland, Newzealand, Scotland and Wales.
- In the year 1936 :- India joined as an affiliate with the organisation.
- IBF now known as Badminton World Federation (BWF), now governs International Badminton and develops the sport globally.

- From 1934- 1955 :- Mr George Alan Thomas was the President of IBF.
- The Headquarters of IBF was located in Cheltenham, UK since founding, from 1st Oct 2015, it was relocated to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
- The American Badminton Association (ABA) was formed in the United States in 1936 and joined the IBF in 1938.
- In the year 1978 :- ABA changed its name to the US Badminton Association.
- In the year 1977 :- First IBF World Championship held at Sweden.
- In the year 2006 :- IBF adopt the New Name Badminton World Federation (BWF).
- In the year 1938 :- Players from other countries began to complete in All England Championships, and a n American Woman named as Judy Hashman, won 17 All England Titles.
- In the year 1939 :- Sir George Thomas donated the Thomas cup, a trophy to be awarded at the International Badminton Championship for the top men's singles players.
- In the year 1989 :- Sudirman cup, Mixed International Team events started every 2 years.
- In the year 1949 :- Thomas cup, Men's World Team Championship started.
- In the year 1956 :- Uber cup, Women's World Team Championship started.
- In the year 1984 :- World Championship was staged once in every 2 years.
- In the year 1972 and 1988 :- Badminton was played as an demonstration sport in Olympic games (Munich, West Germany).
- In the year 1992 :- Badminton become an official Olympic Sport in Barcelona, Spain (Summer Olympics).
- In the year 1996 :- Mixed Doubles added in Olympics.
- In the year 1959 :- Badminton Asia Confideration was established and it is the governing body of Badminton in Asia, It is one of the 5 Continental bodies under BWF, and headquarted in Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
- In the year 2006 :- Asian Badminton Confederation name changed to Badminton Asia Confederation.
